Types of coaching

Coaching is a solution-oriented approach, where a coach works with a client to explore what concrete steps can be taken to help the client achieve a particular set of goals or objectives. The International Coaching Federation defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential”.

Although there are many different types of coaches—leadership, executive, life, wellness, and career—all coaches engage with their clients in thought-provoking, creative processes in order to unlock their clients’ potential and impact the outlook each client has on a specific aspect of their work or personal life.

Career coach

Career coaching differs from leadership, executive, life, and wellness coaching in several respects. The objective of Career coaching is to support clients in making informed decisions about their career development and trajectory, including assisting with a transition to an encore career. Through career coaching, Prystins Insights Coaching can offer various tools and strategies for leaders to use in meeting their goals. These would include the development of resumes, cover letters, and curriculum vitae, interview preparation, employment contract and severance agreement negotiations, using social media, networking, career mapping, and polishing your leadership brand. The career coaching agenda typically is a combination of both professional and life components, with success measured by the extent to which Prystins is able to help sort out issues related to the client’s professional future. A successful career coaching engagement also results in the client gaining career confidence, understanding insights gained from assessments such as Edgar Schein’s Career Anchors, along with receiving encouragement and inspiration from our coaches.

Who needs a career coach?

Career coaching can be helpful at every point of a professional path. Working with a good career coach in the early years of one’s career can put individuals on more solid footing—not just with a well-crafted resume and strategies to broaden one’s network, but also with the addition of an actionable leadership-career management plan. Consulting with us can even be extremely valuable when trying to determine the best type of graduate degree program to complete in order to help further one’s career goals. It can be confusing and daunting for professionals to decipher and understand the myriad of features, benefits, and options available in graduate school. Professionals to be often express frustration with how little formal guidance they ever received on this important (and costly) investment in their career. Often the first step includes a self-assessment of the leadership competencies required in a new role or setting. Having a clearer understanding of how your current competencies can be transferred to a different setting is important information to emphasize, for example in an interview.

Awareness of one’s own competencies through self- assessment , can provide the coach and client with a new job search strategy framework that can be used to evaluate potential positions, and to develop cover letters, objective statements, and targeted resumes.

Who benefits the most from career coaching?

The candidate who will derive the greater benefit from our coaching is someone who is open to new ideas, is willing to step out of his or her comfort zone, is motivated to embark on the challenge of thinking differently about job search and career change process, and is willing to take risks will derive the greatest benefit. How far out on the fringes one can go partly depends on how much risk one is willing or able to take.

Professionals should reach out to their career coach for as much guidance as possible, as well as for help from anyone within their personal or professional networks, in order to succeed.
